Madam President,

We thank the High Commissioner for her remarks and our distinguished panelists for their presentations.

2020 was meant to be a big year of reflections on centrality of gender equality and on moderate progress in protection and promotion of the human rights of all women and girls. Pandemic that threatens to turn into long term humanitarian crises, demonstrated in a most disturbing way, how underlying inequalities, human rights violations and luck of democratic goverence exacerbate existing discrimination against women and girls.

The ongoing struggle against pandemic should have also been a signal to unite the efforts against common enemy, to hear the calls for global ceasefire and stop rising authoritarianism, populism and push back against human rights in some countries.

Almost 20 years ago Security Council asserted the adverse impact of armed conflict on human rights of women and girls and called for their equal participation in peace and security building. However not all countries abide by this rule.

Yesterday Azerbaijan, a country whose policy and practice can serve as an A to Z catalog for all variety of gross violations of international humanitarian and human rights law unleashed full scale military offensive against people of Nagorno Karabagh which resulted in death of a women and her granddaughter.

Armenian women were at the forefront of peaceful and democratic transition in our country, they are in the forefront of Government’s efforts to increase the role of women in security sector, crises management and conflict prevention and they will continue to be the most vocal claimants for restoration of peace in our region.

I thank you.
